Was recently in a storm area and saw some disturbing hits on the industry. Basically sales companies selling roofs with Shingle Master credentials and not a person in the company (well maybe one or two out of lots!) that had even put a roof on a house!!! I've been roofing for 10+ yrs and am trying to start my own company with help from the shingle manufacturers and they want 4 full time workers to get this credential. I don't have enough work to hire 4 full time employees but could use the tools the credentials give. (advertising, lawn signs,etc..) So how can a company that really doesn't have roofers get this and myself needing this, can't achieve the status. I hope this makes sense, but it seems frustrating and marketing is very important at this part of start-up. Ugh!!!>>>
I heard that Illinois ? KY ? got hit pretty hard yesterday. I may be a little off here seeing as I live in a bubble when I'm on these events. That will mean a lot of stormers coming in and ruining a market that should be yours. Can you imagine a market where the stormier is saying the damn locals have taken all the work ? Wouldn'T'nt that be sweet ??>>>
(twill takes a bow) :side:>>>
Twill knows EXACTLY what's up.......I didn't read all the posts...Only the one that ended w/"slash & burn baby!"...How right you are Twill...How dead-on, right you are...........>>>
From the couch to the fridge and back again
Git'er done>>>
Willing to travel are ya Outlaw?>>>
Wow twill, you seem to have hit the nail on the head here!
Now if you could just tell me where to find mr. adjuster, I will be in business>>>
Second wind " Impressive " I don't think at this point I have any juice . Later after a little rest "(NAP) " ;) ;)>>>
Sorry for the edit Chuck. I was inspired.
Anyway, at least you have that option.>>>
twill I guess it is like exercise. Fatigue sets in for those out of shape. On an ever changing landscape nothing is static for ever. Thinking in a abstract can be taxing on the brain. Take a break rest up you will come back stronger than when you left . Thanks for the input.>>>
For the moment these companies want to tout the greenness of their product. All that they actully want to do it seems, is to have that "green" roof torn off, dumped and replaced every couple of years.
And there too, I will leave it to 1-800-free roofs, formerly known as Chuck w/ a Truck, to promote the greenness of the asphalt shingle companies to Mr. & Mrs. Homeowner.
Chuck my question to you is this: Does the bullshit go any deeper here? Every few minutes I get a thought in my head, and this fucking riot act just keeps getting sadder and more pathetic by the moment. So am I leaving anything out? or does Jay Leno cover it in his monologue?
better yet this may be a job for "The Far Side" comic.
Or it could be time for Simpsons to skewer roofing again. Like this: Homer needs a day off. Mr. Burns asks why? "I won the roofing lottery Mr. Burns. Ed MacMahon came by in a stretch limo" "Publishers Clearinghouse?" "No" sez Homer "State Farm"
To make a long story short, Homie ( as Marge calls him) decides to pocket the money. He finds Pedro and Beerman working next door, putting the shaft into Old Ned Flanders. Subbing from Respectable Roofing Co. of America, Inc. he hires them on the spot. Such E-Z money!! Beerman gets drunk and falls off the roof, breaking his back.
Homie (as Marge calls him) simply calls his Homeowners insurance and they immediately take care of all of Beermans medical Expenses.
Lightbulb goes off in Homie's head! Illegal as all shit, but a fella can get rich here!!!
So he makes 3 calls. One to Pedro. Yes! Sez Pedro I will work for you Mr. Homer ( actually he can only say : Shingles, squares & Dinero) So they did understand each other and now Homer is in business.
Then he makes call #2 to Mr. Burns to quit his job!
Then Homer makes the 3rd call..... to his new friend, the Adjuster. "I have a new business called 1-800-free-roofs, and here's $1,000 for you."
"Are you willing to travel?"..................

When 1-800 free-roofs shows up, formerly known as Shane the Frat Boy, his $6000 check and CT credentials is gonna put poor old twill to shame in the eyes of the homeowner. I know this.
twill's Dancing Feet are getting a little old to be dancing around this for much longer. My experience, knowledge and the skills of my company are fast fading to the connection Shane made from the Fraternity. Notice I did not use the word "education". (That is mostly a buzzword for a tax increase nowadays)
You should not have to misunderstand me Chuck, unless you can't read English. Has the economic meltdown taught you nothing? As I have stated many times the root cause of it is not in economics, but morals. And the more this plays out, it is obvious how correct I am.
CIAK there was a day I remember that you actually saw the decline of the roofing trade/ business. Now you seem blind to it. Or you've moved on. Hell I don't know
>>>
    I have to use spell check for alacrity . Send the cash to me . Small bills not necessary $100.00 's will do. Can of worms ?????? I need big words to explain this overused and overrated journalistic cliché, lends itself to mixed metaphors: then again maybe in the original " cans of worms " they were real cans with actual worms in them, collected as bait for fishing which of course doesn't make it a metaphor at all. I really wish you could be clearer in your speech I can't follow a damn thing you say most times .   What a hoot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :woohoo:>>>
Chuck be fair to TJB. His smiling face and willingness to serve any potential customers is gonna get him smacked down real qyick when 1-800-free-roofs, formerly known as Side Job Bob, comes in with his smiling face, promising the same thing PLUS dumping $6,000 into the homeowners lap.
You call that selling? Hmmmm. Well anyway, it is easy to see where CT headed here. For another $7 a sq. throw in a 5 star warranty to match the taillight warranty.
Soon the customer is goona be calling TJB an overpriced, greedy SumBitch.
It is what it is. Don't bother reading anything extra into my statement, re-define what I am saying.
All we want from you Chuck is to tell us where to send the kickbacks, and how much
But you right, we need to learn to use big words like supplement, dinero and alacrity instead of little words.>>>
Whoo boy. Now you've opened up a can of worms.
Canvassers are salesmen? Storm chasers are salesmen? Back room deals between stromchasers and adjusters is selling?
CIAK, you ought to know better than to say stupid shit like that in here.>>>
Somehow being installers have skewed the mind . The reason installers have jobs is because of other sales either major manufactures or other sources some high some low. It is all connected ..... It has a business ring to it. Sales are what make the industry run. The more sales the more money the profit . The more profit the people are at work . Business capitalism 101 . Sales , Sales , Sales. Salesmen are the backbone.>>>
