Havent torn off a pitch roof in a while, chit in my ears, hair, nose, and I have wipe off my sunglasses every 2 minutes. Thankfully, I have some invoicing to do for now....
Pitch is the B*tch...I love it..... Been repairing flashings and penetrations for 40 years, recently spoke with a few old school engineers..... rumor has it that a lot of projects are considering pitch T&G roofs again, for the obvious reasons.... why mess with success?
i know...im a dinosaur..... old school roofig....slate and pitch..... not a lot of competition.
Me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! B) :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: B)
bumping for pictures from lanny. I want to see the tandem torch technique :woohoo: :woohoo:
Back to the subject- Pitch Sucks!! I don't miss it one bit. I expect I will never do another. (It's a damn good roof though!) My 1st pitch job was a tearoff about 30 years ago. If my buddy hadn't driven that day I would not have gotten home. My eyes were trashed! Couldn't see, couldn't even open my eyes, burnt like F'n HELL!! Huge job. A barrel roof on a freezer on the SW side of Chicago. Paid my bills and paid my dues. Some years later I got my first taste of mopping pitch. Now that's a Green Room! If pitch is not hot- I mean hot!- fugget about it. :S
Like Billy & Chuck- lost my Dad at 21. 35 years ago and it's still a hole in my world. Took 10 years to deal with that. Just when you can really get to know him and he's gone. Definitely not fair. Time has a way of dulling the pain. But he gave me roofing! Turns out that ain't so bad.
:)
---Starting a 36 sq torch job Monday. I'll try and get a pic. This one is 2/12 and I seldom use 2 torches on those as it is too hard to control the roll. On dead flat it works like a charm. Lanny
Lanny ??
Lanny Whoa man a circus side show. I Would love to see that. Post a couple of pics. Did someone teach you that? Hell bells man while your at it double fist beers and ice-cream.  B) :) :) B)
I can't imagine that- being a righty a torch in my left hand would'nt be a good idea at all. Up North the way we were taught was to burn down the whole roll in one pass, coming in from the left side so that the residual heat works on the lap so the most you would have to do is come back and target a fishmouth. Down here they burn down the field and then come back and do all the laps in one hit. I prefer the system up North because there is less room for errors- when ur done ur done.
---I get the hot foot when I use 2 torches, one in each hand. When the field is large I use 2 torches, one on the roll and one on the lap. Rolls go down fairly quickly. I have a set up guy getting the next roll ready. ---With that much heat my boots occasionally overheat. Yoouuch! Lanny
Happens to us all Lanny. The hot foot thing stopped when I moved from CT to FL cos down there you don't walk the roll due to the heat already present.
---Just finished a torch job and as usual all the hair on my left arm is gone. I am right handed so the right arm is holding the torch. My left hand reaches to install the membrane from time to time. By the end of the job all the hair is singed off. ---That is better than when my eyebrows get it. And occasionally my eyelashes get singed but that is painful. Lanny
Just buy your laces in bulk-lol
Billy The formidable " Chuck Norris " of flat roofing Mike NZ has a method using a nine iron and he works from the front side pulling instead of kicking it. No hot foot with that technique . Back in the day before time was like it is today I was messing with Mod-Bits kicking the roll . Smoked my toes and banana roll. That was enough for me I wanted to find out what it was like , back to the bean count . If I had to guess .I really didn't want to know . Leave it to the pros's B) ;) :) B)
lol, "hot foot" sux.
Jed: I still wear jeans to this day on BUR, but what really taught me to be a less messy mopper was my wife doing my laundry
Ciak : I am sorry to hear you lost your dad early, I was 23 when mine passed, and I am a ripe old 31 now. But your dad sounds exactly like mine, almost sadistic to a sense but there really is no better way to learn than trial by fire.
There are some classic ass chewings he gave me I will never forget, my 1st leak might have been the worst ever, but it was always a lesson learned and a valuable growing experience.
My favorite experience ever was literally trial by fire, when he was teaching me torch down, I caught my shoe on fire... :woohoo:
