(That little 1.5" piece w/ the high nail is not part of a starter course....it is part of the 1st course) This homeowner told me we were too expensive in 1998. In 2010 he paid even more to dispose of 36 sq some damn good shingles

Too continue free.... Customers cannot comprehned numbers. The headlines after Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad mostly focused on how inexpensive it was. Only $499! That's a good price for a ... wait -- for a what? The thing didn't exist before that day. That's actually more than a netbook costs. It's more than a phone. So how did we decide $499 was a good price? Good question. Also, why are we still doing the $_99 thing on our prices? Instead of just saying "It'll be five hundred dollars" we still frame it as $499, even when addressing a crowd full of educated, savvy consumers? As if we're too stupid to realize $499 is only one dollar less? We've surely figured that out by now, right? Actually, no. Humans are really bad with numbers, and it manifests itself in a whole bunch of different ways in the world of retail. It's the reason you will patiently wait for a sweater to go on sale so you can get it for 10% off, then buy it with a credit card and wind up paying more than the original retail price once the interest is figured in. It's the reason we'll take a longer mortgage on a house in exchange for a lower payment, because we can't wrap our minds around the idea that the longer mortgage means over time we're going to pay $50,000 more for the exact same house. So when it comes to setting prices, sellers know that it's mostly up to them to frame for us what the price should be. In the biz they call this anchoring. So you'll go to Best Buy and see a new TV that's 25% off of the "Regular Price" or "MSRP." Then you Google around and find that what they're claiming is the "regular price" is in fact not the price, anywhere. You're saving 25 percent over an imaginary number. As for the iPad's pleasant surprise price of $499? That was due to rumors leading up to the launch that it would cost $1,000 from sources like the Apple Insider. Then in the unveiling, Jobs was sure to mention how everyone expects the device to cost a thousand bucks. He plants that idea in your mind and suddenly $499 looks like a steal. What is there to understand? It is not like free is brandy new. You will have trouble with free. I'll give you an idea. Let your customers know you are giving them something valuable (Free). Do not just be an order taker, considered yourself a consultant, with a mission to help your customers reach their goals first (free), before selling them anything. Try it. Snifffff... breathe deeply everyone... can you smell it? The scent of disagreement once again fills the air! Now it is starting to feel like home again!

I don't know about anyone else, but I am getting in line for the free pens!

HEY CHUCKIE LEAVE THOSE PENS ALONE !!!!

Just kiddin'. Trying to get an understanding of "free" is all.

I am OK w/ everyone making money CIAK. I am not at the top of the food chain like your friends, The Koch Brothers. I NEED other people to be successful, which is why I am for a strong and prosperous middle class. Slave labor would only engulf me, not "free" me.

I give out alot of "free" stuff. Estimates. Information. Advice. Time. And yes, pens.

Your accusing me of stealing pens and pencils? B)  B) Next on your twisted agenda you will ask questions concerning political activities, racial or religious beliefs, or sexual activities. Oh Yeah that's right Obama was your guy. All this petty nonsense aside, People who can't afford something expect to be given it for free. From someone who knows how to make money from free. You slander as evil because I don't follow your business model. It sort of like, if you can't make money I shouldn't either. Despite all this Tom I really think you and I would get along if we met. I just don't agree with you B) :) :) B) Deep Down In Florida Where The Sun Shines Damn Near Every Day

Sure they can do it Chuck. Every sub-contractor w/ a p/up truck, nail gun and compressor is a hired gun right now. Aiming squarely at all of us overpaid (?), greedy contractors (above board) who have nothing to offer but a higher price (Better value)

But you are right. After making such an investment in myself, my business and my life, I should give it away for free.

Where does the welfare line start? 'Cause guess what---I won't be working for State Farm when I am out of business and my kids need food :P (They don't seem to give anything away for "free" either. My insurance keeps going UP, not coming DOWN)

Remember Chuck, the cups and pencils that you take away from your employer are not "free". Someone paid for them. If you are taking from a store friend, it is called "SHOPLIFTING" and it is a crime.

In the end you can't possibly be talking about any kind of true "free". You must be talking of giving someone ( potential cient) the impression of "free".

And yes, been there, done that and still do it.

A question for anyone in business is, 'Can someone do what you do for free?' Can a homeowner who educates themselves in all the process of the roofing world find the individuals to to the work while they run it from there dining room table. Do what you do for free?? If the answer is 'yes' you have a problem. Wake up!!! Learn how to make "free" work for you. You getting this????? The customer is the scarcity. Not your service. Your service is a commodity. Old business models premised on selling an abundantly available good as if it were scarce are close too, if not over.

No Chit Sherlock. :cheer:

90% of the Roofers in this country don't deal in that concept (reality) however. Try telling the homeowner that the other guy's roof job won't really solve their problem when him and 8 others are @ 60% of your price.

They can be sold, if they care, or if the modifcations actually need made. I am usually the 3rd or 4th in -----when they are finally ready to give up on cheep price and quick fixes

As I've said, I can only communicate with about 10-20% of the marketplace. The 10-20% that will pay to get the job done right.

After saying all that, we are still learning and perfecting everyday, but we are miles and years ahead of the competition.

I also sense that the day is quickly arriving where the consumer knows as much as most of the fellas trying to get roofing work nowadays. They can easily become a "contractor" for one job and get it done as well as hiring someone to do it whose only knowledge is changing out the shingles.

twill in your part of the country with ice daming problems. Counter intuitive the idea venting can actually hurt if it contributes to air leakage from indoors to the roof cavity. The solution is not add or reduce ventilation but to seal air leaks from the inside. One size does not fit all. B) :) :) B) Deep Down In Florida Where The Sun Shines Damn Near Every Day

C. I question the filter too.

October 28, 2010 at 2:56 p.m.

egg

Well, if you only want 1/3 at the top, you're going to need some LARGE stuff happening at the bottom with a big old vent at the top. Are we shooting for 1/300th here or are we into some different arena?

Those rolled goods are pitiful. I put on a strip 17 years ago and last week I could flick it with my finger and get miniature dust clouds coming out of it. I'm sticking with something that A. looks good, B. can be shaped to hold a cleanly pitched profile, C. has no filter in it, and D. has an external fin. That would be Lomanco in my book.

So long as I can get the square inches I'm shooting for and get them where I need them, I might even make a substantial portion of the ridge vent dummy. Might use holes instead of slots. Might use a slot only on the lee side. Etc. Manuf.'s and code officials want numbers and I meet or exceed the numbers. One of my favorites is finding a 1/2 inch vent chute with a slot cut at the ridge that is two inches on each side. Good thinking. Another is finding a filled grid that is condensing. We have to differentiate between moving volumes of hot air and merely allowing vapor to escape without condensing. imho/fwiw
