Picked up a print today. It calls for a Green roof. EPDM over tapered insulation with a grid system for growing grass. The grids are 2ft. X 2ft. placed over a protective mat over the rubber. Anybody ever do one of these? Any idea of the work involved in installing this system. The roof part I'M good with but I never did one of these systems.

Thank you wywoody

I was surfing the web looking for material to create a roofers manual for field operations and stumbled across this very interesting web site.

I have been involved in hundred of thousands of square feet of green roofing, my advise to you is to call the supplier of the print and find out these specific details. Has the deck been engineered to handle the weight? (request the engineers drawing and a document stating the weights per square foot) Can they change the spec from EPDM with tapered to hot rubber or a modified membrane fully adhered to the deck? Who holds the warranty for the plants? What type of plans and where were they grown? Who is maintaining the plants? (normally the provider of the system is responsible for the plants for at least two years).

What was that one song, "here's your sign"? It is funny to hear what people think in different areas of the country. some are serious too!

Old School said: Very funny Willie. I guess that is "green" technology down south eh! Actually no. Green technology around here is growing stuff in the gutters and letting the algae spread everywhere on the roof. lol

Modular green roofs tend to be very expensive and with tapered insulation covered with EPDM, I would be very, very worried about the weight factor. I hope it's a reinforced EPDM over a high density ISO with something like Densdeck as a cover board. Personally, I think a fully adhered to deck design is far superior. Make sure your vegetation is locally grown and watch out for the maintenance terms (such as any requirement for irrigation, plant loss, etc.) that go with any warranty. Good luck!

Looks kind of fun to do. I'll have to check out the specs. to see what all is involved. I know there will be some flag stone areas.
