Ahh! We took the whole crew over there and worked on the flat deck of the tower roof. A tapered system, solid decking, EPDM, set three scuppers and installed a roof hatch, plus we cleaned and coated it right away with the Conklin Acrylic polymer. it is about as bullet proof as you are going to get. More finished pictures of the whole assembly.

Well, it was two weeks and I went back and made up a bunch of gutters and also took over some copper siding for the dormers. Actually, there was a ton of copper I took over there to install. 6" copper gutters seamless is the way to go on something like this! It is a nice look, especially with the cast fascia brackets. Hey, the copper siding is not bad either. give it a look!

Mike, I am going back there to hang the copper gutters and install the copper siding panels in about a week and a half. I promise I will take a bunch of pictures and post them for all to see. By then it will be over 1/2 done too, It is really looking nice.

Thanks John.

Upon closer inspection, I suppose that will pass (wink)

Vickie, I don't mind as long as you give credit ...or blame, as the case might be. I really enjoy that type of work and it is my mission to teach as many people about slate and tile roofing as I can before I have to give it up. I will be 62 in a bit over a month and I have been working on roofs literally all my life now. I have home movies of me on a roof when I was 4, so that makes about 57 years.

If I can take pictures of things and give as many details as I can, I know that the capable roofers will get it, or at least have the information so that they can ask the correct questions. For guys like Tinner or copperman that work with this stuff all the time, it an opportunity to put myself out there and get their critique or criticism to, and that makes us all better roofers. I certainly don't claim to know it all, as I learn something new every day. Glad I can contribute in any small way.

BTW. What is an Eblast, and where would I be able to read it? Old School.

Dear Old School:

I featured this in my eblast this week. Sorry I didn't ask you first. I just had too. I love watching you work and everyone can learn something from you. Don't be mad. I'll be more proactive next time.

Mike, we bent up a "trough" valley in copper and brought both of them together at the peak. The tops run through and overlap at the peak. The pictures are actually in reverse order, as we took a piece of beveled 2 x 4 that completed the peak and it slid underneath the copper to support it on the peak of the dormer. The tops of the next row of slates attached to this nailer, and then we put another nailer at the peak to hold the ridges on with. This whole assembly was covered with another piece of copper flashing and that flashing covered the joints you are seeing in the picture you highlighted. It was then covered with the ridges that installed last. I will see if I can get some better detail pictures the next time I go over.

John,

That's really gorgeous work, from what I can tell.

Can you give me some close-ups, or even better, a detailed description of what I see where the dormer ridge meets the main slope. This flat-lander is having trouble comprehending what I see with the copper flashings in this photo https://picasaweb.google.com/crookston.john4/ChelseaSlateRoofing?authkey=Gv1sRgCI2___6w6pnzqwE#6016418306503613266

I worked there again today. Here are the pictures we have. It is coming along well considering the amount of rain we have had to deal with. It should start to move faster as the guys are getting it and the hard cutting is about done.

This is going to we insulated and well ventilated, so most of the snow should remain so. I just want something over the doors to protect them. The farther east you get from Lake Michigan, the less snow you get, but it can get nasty. they had a lot there this winter.

That's also a good idea and the correct way to hang gutters. :) I guess I was more concerned with the buildup of snow and ice that occurs at the eaves. BTW, I watched some of the roofs I covered in SG's and the snow seems to melt off the bottom nearly as fast as the ridge. I start about 2' up from the gutter.

I was just curious and don't have much experience with the snow amounts you get. :)

Tinner, We looked at that, but most of the area around the building is going to be open, and rather than fight the snow and ice we decided to let it slide off the roof onto the ground. I will hold the front lip of the gutter down so that the snow can slide right over the top of it.

You know, after looking at the scope of work being done, I'm surprised he didn't spring for enough snow guards for proper retention at 4'-6' vertical intervals.

Nice looking work though. :)
